HowIVoted data sources and use notes.
HowIVoted is a civic-learning site. It organizes public election information, poll activity, and educational content so users can explore how elections work.
What we use
Election pages may reference public federal election records, Electoral College records, congressional election statistics, state election materials, and nonpartisan civic datasets.
How we present it
We simplify labels, group related records, and format civic terms for public use. We do not present HowIVoted as an official source of election certification.
Core source list
- National Archives: Electoral College Results
- Federal Election Commission: Election Results and Voting Information
- Federal Election Commission: Campaign Finance Data
- Office of the Clerk, U.S. House: Federal Election Statistics
- MIT Election Data and Science Lab: Data
Source priority
Official election sources are used first when available. If sources conflict, HowIVoted treats the official election source as the controlling source.
Update practice
Historical data pages are reviewed when official records, source corrections, or site data updates are available.
User poll data
User-created polls reflect HowIVoted site participation only. They are not scientific surveys, forecasts, official election results, or representative samples.
Corrections
If data appears outdated or inconsistent with an official source, use the official source first and contact the site owner for review. Include the page, record, source link, and reason for review.
